John Clark House Near Jacksonville, Ga.

According to information received, this was the original house of Maj Gen John Clark of Jacksonville, Ga. It must have been built around c. 1812 as that was about the time the Clarks would have come to Telfair County to establish plantations and fight Indians. In 1816 John Clark was foreman of the Grand Jury at Jacksonville and in 1818 he gave "about an acre" for a "babtist" church near his home. Also, Fort Clark was located nearby. After Clark moved from Governor's Hill, a B. Williams inhabited the place and after that A.J. Bowen bought the place. After that the Julian Jones Family lived in the old house, still bolstered by lighterd blocks as the foundation of the house. The old house burned in the 1960's or so -- someone might have a year for that. If so, let me know. The kitchen was on the very back and this was not unusual as this was a precaution against fire. Thanks to Sylvia Jones Lee and Frank Lee for obtaining this picture for use on this website.
