Before he became Governor of Georgia John Clark had a plantation on this site. It is said the old home in the background of this picture was the original house built by Clark in the early 1800's. It burned several years ago. It had long and spacious porches and a runway through the middle of the house. The kitchen was at the back of the house on a wing almost separated from the main part of the house. The rise on which the house was located was known as "Governor's Hill." John Clark was Governor of Georgia from 1819-1823. He gave the original land in 1818 for what was to become Blockhouse Baptist Church. (He gave "about an acre" for a "babtist" church.)
