Fernbank Museum of Natural History is conducting digs near Jacksonville, Ga., to discover the remains and/or tangible evidence of the existence of an old Spanish mission, Santa Isabel de Utinahica (c.1616-1630). This would also tie in with the local belief that DeSoto crossed the river near here also and that the first Christian baptism in the New World took place near Jacksonville, Ga. (See other marker nearby for that information.) For a readable image of this marker go to the next image on this website by pressing "next."
