Capt. Gabriel Clements, ancestor of many of the members of the Clements family around Jacksonville, Georgia, fought with General Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion in South Carolina. The British feared both men. Capt. Clements at one time headed up the entire South Carolina militia. He died before reaching Telfair (buried in Crawford County) but his widow, Mary, made it to Telfair with the family and she is buried at Clements Cemetery near Jacksonville, Georgia.
