Fort Clark, two miles west of Jacksonville, Georgia, stood on the site of the present-day Blockhouse Church. The fort was built in 1813 and served as a refuge against Indians. When possible the settlers would worship in one of the two "blockhouses" inside the fort - hence the name, "Blockhouse Church." It was also on land adjacent to this site that John Clark had a plantation and house. He later became Governor of Georgia and his Jacksonville estate was sold after his death.
