The Wildes Massacre - 1838

The Wildes Massacre was near Waresboro. The tragedy underlined the fact that the Indians were still around. Some of the boys were able to get away and so we still have the Wildes Family descendants today. About nine were killed and they were put in a wagon and buried in a mass grave. There is a marker at the spot.

Hello extended family. I am a descendant of Sarah Jane's brother Hugh. I am looking for the cemetery that Hugh is buried in. From personal letters it is called the old Stafford Ferry graveyear, but I have yet to locate it. I did not know if anyone from Sarah's side knew where her father was buried. Thanks!

I am a descendent of Jesse Wildes. He was my gr-gr-gr grandfather. We live in Reidsville (Tattnall County) Ga. My grandfather was Esten B. Wildes. His grandfather was William Minor Wildes, son of Jesse Wildes. I have become more interested in family origins due to a recent class assignment of my daughter's. I am a decendent of the Wildes family also but in Wisconsin. Our part of the Wildes family came from the New England states and settled in the middle of Wisconsin. What I have found to be very common with "The Wildes" is that we continue to use names from the past and give them to our children. The D.L. Wildes referred to as the "milk man" are the same intials as my father ( Durlin Lee Wildes ) and my own ( Douglas Lee Wildes ) Do you have any idea what the D.L. letters stand for? I hope to visit the Old Jacksonville, GA site some day as well as the Salem, MA site of the "Witch Trails of Salem" where Sarah Wildes was put to death as a witch.

Jackie, Thanks for posting a message re: The Wildes Family -- D.L. Wildes delivered milk to my father's store in Jacksonville -- we thought the world of him -- Merle and Joyce played basketball at Broxton -- I talk with Kenny occasionally here in Douglas -- you have a great family and it has been my pleasure to know some of them -- Julian. PS - Apologize for not checking this part of the site as I should. Oh, I visited the Wildes Monument where the massacre took place -- have you?

I am a decendat of the Wildes family and am recently looking into our family history. I was happy to find this. My grandmother wrote about the Wildes massacre by what she was told by family.
