First Christian Baptism In America - Marker 4a

In 1540 a Dominican priest traveling with Hernando de Soto baptized two Indians, Mark and Peter, somewhere in the Ocmulgee River, according to many historians. The Spanish chronicles recorded that it took place "where the river runs east." The Big Bend of the river near Jacksonville runs eastward. Above that location and below the river takes a different direction. But who knows? The speculation continues - and will! [Marker placed June 25, 2002]
